MODULATORS :: APPLICATIONS :: Measurement of Degree of Polarization of Fluorescence/Luminescence

The polarization of fluorescence radiation emitted by a sample is frequently correlated with the (linear) polarization of the exciting radiation.  Usually the emitted light polarization is parallel to the exciting light polarization.  A parameter P (Equation 1) defines the degree of polarization of fluorescent light.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP

PEM in a Fluorescence Measurement Setup

Where I|| = the intensity of fluorescence light parallel to excitation,     I= Intensity of fluorescent light normal to excitation, A0 = /2 (/4 waves)  and J1(A0) = 0.567
